{"id":2640,"date":"2015-04-23T05:30:07","date_gmt":"2015-04-23T15:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/?p=2640"},"modified":"2015-04-22T20:25:44","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T06:25:44","slug":"dont-believe-everything-you-hear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/?p=2640","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t believe everything you hear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago when I was in radio and doing news on KGU we had a traffic reporter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capt-Irwin-sized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2643\" src=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capt-Irwin-sized-250x170.jpg\" alt=\"Capt-Irwin-sized\" width=\"250\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capt-Irwin-sized-250x170.jpg 250w, http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capt-Irwin-sized.jpg 500w, http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capt-Irwin-sized-441x300.jpg 441w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>Why is because K59 had Captain Irwin flying his helicopter and doing traffic.<br \/>\nK59 is now KSSK.<\/p>\n<p>It had real live stuff from 500 feet over the action.<br \/>\nYeah, it&#8217;s a crappy picture but the only one I have.<\/p>\n<p>All this was happening when KGU was still a real radio station, but poor.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, someone decided the station needed a traffic helicopter too so it wouldn&#8217;t lose afternoon traffic listeners to Captain Irwin.<\/p>\n<p>Meet Roger Hedges.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t have a picture of him so enjoy this one of someone else.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Traffic-lady-sized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2642\" src=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Traffic-lady-sized.jpg\" alt=\"Traffic-lady-sized\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Traffic-lady-sized.jpg 300w, http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Traffic-lady-sized-250x162.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rodger became the helicopter traffic reporter for KGU during morning and afternoon rush hour traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the time I think he sold real estate.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was &#8211; the station didn&#8217;t have a helicopter.<br \/>\nIt couldn&#8217;t afford one.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s okay.<br \/>\nRoger still did traffic reports.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;d go into one of the small studios listen to Captain Irwin&#8217;s report then get on the phone to the guy on the air.<br \/>\nUsually me.<\/p>\n<p>He tuned an AM portable radio to static and put it near his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>He would started beating on his chest for the sound of the rotor blades and make his voice sound like he was riding in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>It was marvelous.<br \/>\nIt sounded like the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>We thought it was so funny we&#8217;d almost barf.<br \/>\nHey, I was young at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody thought we had a genuine helicopter with a genuine traffic reporter watching over them.<\/p>\n<p>People would call up and ask if Roger could fly over a certain area to report on what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>Glad to help.<br \/>\nIf Captain Irwin didn&#8217;t have a report on that &#8211; Roger would just make it up.<\/p>\n<p>Radio is theater of the mind.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sharedaddy sd-sharing-enabled\"><div class=\"robots-nocontent sd-block sd-social sd-social-icon-text sd-sharing\"><h3 class=\"sd-title\">Share this:<\/h3><div class=\"sd-content\"><ul><li class=\"share-facebook\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-shared=\"sharing-facebook-2640\" class=\"share-facebook sd-button share-icon\" href=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/?p=2640&amp;share=facebook\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Click to share on Facebook\"><span>Facebook<\/span><\/a><\/li><li class=\"share-twitter\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-shared=\"sharing-twitter-2640\" class=\"share-twitter sd-button share-icon\" href=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/?p=2640&amp;share=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Click to share on Twitter\"><span>Twitter<\/span><\/a><\/li><li class=\"share-email\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-shared=\"\" class=\"share-email sd-button share-icon\" href=\"http:\/\/grumpyseniors.com\/?p=2640&amp;share=email\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Click to email this to a friend\"><span>Email<\/span><\/a><\/li><li class=\"share-end\"><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago when I was in radio and doing news on KGU we had a traffic reporter.
